BOROUGHWIDE MESSAGE

Leave a light on!

Going for a night out? Burglars like to avoid homes when you are in.

Police in Bexley are asking every resident to leave a light on when going out during the hours of darkness, regardless for how short a time. Draw the curtains, switch on a light and, if you have one, switch on a radio. Make it appear there is still someone at home. Please remember:

BEFORE going out at night, Lights, Locks then Leave.

Bexley currently is the safest borough in London.

POLICE WARN RESIDENTS TO BE WARY OF CARD SCAM

Bromley Police are reissuing their warning about a scam in which fraudsters use false pretences to try and get people's bank cards, after 25 attempts to perpetrate this scam across the borough in recent weeks.

The scam works by the victim initially receiving a phone call, or number of phone calls, from someone claiming to be from their bank or credit card supplier. The caller obtains personal details from the victim before advising them that they need a new card and telling them that a courier will visit them shortly to collect their old card. A person, dressed to look like a courier, then arrives at the door to take the card.

A spokesman for Bromley Police said: 'It is important that residents are aware of the tactics used by con-artists. Never-ever disclose your bank details to anyone cold calling. Banks will never call you asking for personal or account information as they already have these details, and neither will the Police. If there was a problem with your card and it needed to be replaced the bank would write to you advising you to cut the card up. You should never give out bank details or other personal information over the phone, whatever the reason behind the request.'

APPLICATION BY BEXLEY'S PARKS & OPEN SPACES DEPARTMENT FOR A 'PREMISES LICENCE' REFUSED.

Members of our Association and the many other residents of the area who attended the meeting were overjoyed at the decision of the Licensing Sub-Committee to refuse to grant a Premises Licence for Foots Cray Meadows, which would have allowed events attracting up to 3,000 people.

This welcome decision ended months of worry on the part of local residents about the harm such large events would cause to this Grade 11 Listed open space and its wildlife, and the nuisance from noise and the probable parking on local roads were the suggested arrangements at Cleeve Park School not to materialise.

Our members are grateful, too, to Councillor Don Massey for his well-argued presentation of our case, supported by our chairman, David Cook; and the invaluable input of the many other other residents who also expressed their concerns to the committee.

To read the full 'Stop Press' report, please follow this link.

Bexley have 21 days in which they may lodge an appeal.

Our Association had previously lodged a formal objection to the application, details of which can be seen by following this link. (pdf format).
